soccer
A team sport played between two teams of eleven players using a soccer ball. The object of the game is to score by driving the ball into the opposing goal.
Soccer is formally called "Association football", but is more commonly known as "football" in most countries outside of the United States, Japan, Canada, and Australia.
The term "soccer" is of UK origin, being a shorthand for Association Football at Oxford University that has now long fallen out of use there. It is a term in the same vein as "rugger" which refers to Rugby Football.
