salamander
A common name for a species of amphibians. They are typically characterized by their slender bodies, short noses, and long tails.
In pre-scientific days, they were associated with fire and several ancient writers believed they were born from fire or could consume or otherwise extinguish it with the cold(-blooded) bodies. Many fantastic works use them as a kind of fire elemental.
