roto (dq3)
勇者(DQ3) 勇者ロト 男勇者(DQ3) 女勇者(DQ3)
The hero in Dragon Quest III. While the game gave a choice to play a male or female hero, the sprite used was the same. Thus the female hero is often drawn androgynous in fan art. Nevertheless the genderswap tag does not apply here. In the remakes of the game, there are different sprites for the male and female versions of Roto.
Note that "Roto" is a title more than anything else, given to the greatest of heroes in Alefgard. The hero became Roto at the very end of the game, after saving the underworld (Alefgard) by defeating Zoma. They would later become the ancestor of the DQ1 and DQ2 heroes.
In English translations, aside from a brief stint as "Loto", the title has been consistently translated as "Erdrick", used in the original NES translation of the first game.
He (that is, the male hero), along with the heroes of IV, VIII and XI, was chosen to be a fighter on Super Smash Bros. Ultimate's first fighters pass. They are collectively Fighter #72, with Eleven as the "face".
