サマルトリアの王子 sumaltria_no_ouji prince_of_cannock
One of the two male player characters in Dragon Quest II. In english translations, "Samantoria", "Sumaltria" or whatever has been changed into "Cannock".
His name was random in the original game, chosen from a small pool of names. One particular name in the japanese version ("Tonnura") became a sort of in-joke due to sounding "odd and stupid" to Japanese people. This, coupled with him being the weakest of the trio in the original versions of the game, has given a sort of impact in future games.
As mentioned, he is the weakest of the trio in the original Famicom/NES versions, due to being unable to use late-game equipment (His strongest equipment is equivalent to Lorasia/Midenhall's mid-game equipment). Remakes of the game rebalances him by giving him access to more gear, making him a potent fighter-mage.
