order of the red banner
A Soviet military decoration for heroism in combat, awarded from 1924-1991. Originally the highest honor in the Soviet armed forces, until surpassed by the Order of Lenin in 1930; however, the latter was not strictly reserved for military heroism.
It consists of a white enamel badge with a golden hammer and sickle, a red star, gold trim of wheat, and crossed items including a red flag with the motto "Workers of the World, unite" etched on it.
