She is portrayed with very long black hair tied low with a rice stalk hair ornament and red hair ribbons, and grey eyes. Her default outfit consists of a green dress in a vaguely hakama skirt style with an oversized obi, white jacket worn off shoulder with detached sleeves, bridal gauntlets, green socks, and platform footwear. Medium damage reveals white lace panties with red ribbon trimming similar to a miko's sleeves.

Her rigging consists of a 12.7 cm anti-aircraft gun mount on a Shinto offertory pedestal with shide, and a hull piece to her back with her real-life cranes, mast, and aircraft catapults.

Despite having a large number of seasonal CGs, most have little variance between them.

Historically, she was sunk early in the war on May 2, 1942 by USS Drum. While her name literally means "Young ear of rice", it is an ancient name for Japan: Mizuho no Kuni, the "Country of Abundant Rice".
