The second entry in the Megami Tensei series, released in 1990, following up the original from 1987. Unlike the original, which adapted the events of the book "Digital Devil Story: Megami Tensei", this game follows an original plot, set 35 years after a nuclear apocalypse devastated the world and permanently opened a portal to the demon realm.
This game would be partially remade in the form of 1992's Shin Megami Tensei I, setting in stone the brand and series from then on. Megaten I and II would also see an enhanced Super Famicom port in 1995, entitled Kyuuyaku Megami Tensei.
