mauser 98
A series of bolt action rifles designed and manufactured by Mauser, chambered for 7.92×57mm and utilizes 5-round internal magazine. The Mauser 98 is recognizable by its two handguard metal bands on the front (one serves for sling swivels), ability to store a cleaning rod inside the lower handguard, and semi-grip buttstock. This tag refers any variants, such as:
- Gewehr 98, introduced in 1898. The original model that served the German military during World War I. Has a straight bolt handle.
- Karabiner 98k, introduced in 1935. Essentially the shortened Gewehr 98 of it with a bent bolt. Used by the Germans during World War II.
- Other foreign-produced copies such as the Polish Wz.29 and Chinese Type 24.
