kirishima (kancolle)
霧島 Lit. "Fog Island", named after the Kirishima volcanic mountain range.
Kirishima is the fourth and last ship of the Kongou-class battleships in Kantai Collection. (Though Kirishima and Haruna were completed on the same day, Haruna is generally considered to have been the third ship of the class due to having been laid down one day earlier.)
Character design by Konishi (koconatu), voiced by Touyama Nao.
Appearance
All of the Kongou-class wear a modified miko uniform with differently colored skirts and thigh boots. They also wear the same signature winged hairband.
Kirishima herself has short black hair, green-framed glasses and wears a dark blue skirt. She uses a spider-like rig. In the anime, the lenses of her glasses have a heads-up display that shows various information.
Sometimes seen holding a microphone due to her doing a mic check in her intro. This is now enforced with her hourlies.
Kirishima Kai Ni
For her second remodeling, she gains the same modifications as Kongou and her rig is replaced with one used by Kongou. She is also noticably taller than her sisters.
The real-life Kirishima
During the Second Battle of Guadalcanal, the historical Kirishima took the lead in a bloody night battle that, together with the previous night's losses, sank so many ships that it led to the body of water they fought in being named "Ironbottom Sound". Kirishima helped sink several allied ships & was able to damage the USS South Dakota, due to the Dakota suffering an electrical failure, but ultimately was sunk by USS Washington because of bad spacial awareness. She also bombarded Henderson Field during the night, an event that would be named "The Nightmare of Solomon" by the American marines stationed on Henderson Field.
Because of these events, and possibly on the basis of her namesake, Kirishima is sometimes shown to have a darker side or a hot temper, as in post #1675401. The pixiv tag マイクチェックの時間だオラァ! (often translated as "It's mic check time, dammit!") is dedicated to this violent side of hers.
She is oftentimes depicted with South Dakota, as rivals or as not being in good terms, following their past history.
Her "Nightmare of Solomon" title is traditionally given to Yuudachi, but whether Yuudachi actually deserves this nickname is contested.
