kanagawa okinami ura
(かながわおきなみうら, The Great Wave off Kanagawa / Under the Wave off Kanagawa)
The best-known of Ukiyo-e master Katsushika Hokusai's ”36 Views of Mt. Fuji,” this piece depicts a large wave cresting over fishing skiffs in a bay near Kanagawa, with Mount Fuji itself dwarfed by the wall of water and offered little contrast from the roiled skies above.
Because it has become an iconic representation of Japanese art, the motif is frequently used in modern works where it tends to impart a sort of "traditional" feel.
