kako (kancolle)
The representation of the IJN Kako, second ship (of two) of the Furutaka-class Heavy Cruisers in Kantai Collection.
Character design by UGUME, voiced by Ootsubo Yuka.
Personality
In-game, she is distinctly tomboyish and uses language that is "rough around the edges". She also has something of a lazy or carefree/careless streak.
Like several other second ships, she seems highly attached to her "older sister", calling out to Furutaka frequently, although Kako doesn't display siscon tendencies like Yamashiro does. Instead, Kako seems to rely upon Furutaka to be more reliable to buoy up Kako's recklessness, (trying to send Furutaka to "boring strategy meetings" in her place,) insisting Furutaka always go with her on missions, and boasting to Furutaka during night battle attacks.
Appearance
Kako has long, messy, black hair in a ponytail, in which she has twin hairclips on the left side of her parted bangs. One of several hair spikes form an ahoge. Her blue-and-white serafuku has a notably short waist, exposing ample midriff or even having underboob. She also wears a red neckerchief, and short pleated skirt.
Her combat gear includes large deck-like armored platforms protruding over her shoulders with a twin-cannon turret on her left, and an extended platform over her whole right arm with another pair of turrets sporting twin-cannons over her right wrist. She also wears torpedo launchers strapped to her thighs, and her armored boots are plain and simple in design, with no visible keels or other distinguishing marks.
History
Historically, Kako was part of Cruiser Division 6, led by Aoba. She fought in the first major sea battle dominated entirely by air power, Coral Sea, where CruDiv6 was to escort Shouhou, however Shouhou was sunk during this battle by American airpower. Then sent to escort Shoukaku, Shoukaku was also damaged and forced to retreat. When Kako was covering the retreat of the Coral Sea invasion force ships, she ran aground, and had to be pulled back for repair.
Following this, after the battle of Savo Island, not far from where Coral Sea was fought, when CruDiv6 was travelling unescorted to Kavieng, they were attacked by the US submarine USS S-44, which struck Kako with 3 torpedoes, bursting all the portholes open, allowing seawater to rush to the boilers, which then exploded, resulting in Kako sinking.
Because both her major actions were in the same general area, Kako's lines include one about how "going back [to the same location of battle] is scary".
