hachikou (dog)
Hachikou (1923-1935) was a dog belonging to Professor Ueno Hidesaburou of Tokyo Imperial University (current University of Tokyo). He famously awaited his master's return home at Shibuya Station in Tokyo every day from the professor's death in 1925 until his own in 1935, for which he was honored with a statue at the station. Today, said statue is a popular meeting place.
