etorofu (kancolle)
Etorofu (択捉) is the lead ship of the Etorofu-class coastal defense ships, as represented in Kantai Collection.
Appearance
Etorofu has red hair fading to blonde at the tips in a bob cut with braided sidelocks and thick eyebrows. She has purple tsurime eyes. She wears a variation of an elementary school serafuku with long sleeves and prominent buttons, with a hat bearing a blue ribbon, blue_neckerchief, white gloves, blue pleated skirt over bike shorts, black socks, and mary janes. On her right ankle, another blue ribbon is tied like an anklet, while on her left, an anchor on a chain forms another form of anklet.
Her rigging involves a pistol-like single-cannon turret held in her left hand. A mast and smokestack are carried on her back by straps like a backpack, while depth charge launchers are held like a purse from another strap. An anti-air gun is strapped to her right thigh, and more depth charges are strapped to her left.
As a coastal defense ship, her class is even smaller than destroyers, and as such, she is portrayed as an "elementary school student" character, even younger than the generally "middle school" appearances of the destroyers.
Personality
Etorofu has an energetic, dutiful and forthright personality, similar to, but even more eager than Fubuki.
Variants
She obtained a new CG for her remodel with the July 14th 2017 update. The only real difference outside of a more dynamic pose is the additional depth charges attached to her right sleeve.
Her first seasonal CG is her Autumn Festival CG. She wears a blue checkered yukata with a yellow morning glory print while holding a serving of cotton candy in her right hand along with a pouch and a goldfish scoop in the other hand. Her damaged portrait reveals that she was still wearing her bike shorts under her yukata.
Her second seasonal CG is her Rain Season CG. She wears a casual outfit consisting of a striped shirt and a long black skirt. She is also wearing rubber boots, carrying a satchel and holding a pink umbrella with teruterubouzu hanging from it, one of them in her own effigy. Upon being damaged, her satchel has been revealed to contain depth charges and her shredded skirt also reveals her (equally damaged) bike shorts.
Her third seasonal CGs are her Summer CGs. Those are identical to her normal CGs except for short sleeves and she holds a serving of shaved ice instead of her gun. Also, she smiles instead of her usual expressions.
Her fourth seasonal CG is her Saury Festival CG. She wears a purple happi and holds a serving of saury.
Her fifth seasonal CG is her Setsubun CG. She wears a coat identical to Sado's in her own Setsubun CG.
For a collaboration with Lawson in February 2019 (for Valentine's day), she was one of three shipgirls designated to wear the employee's uniform, although her appearance is limited to promotional pins.
History
The historical IJN Etorofu was completed on the 25th of March, 1943 primarily to escort supply convoys. The Etorofu-class was developed specifically as an upgrade of the Shimushu-class to give it greater anti-submarine capabilities as American submarine warfare inflicted significant losses upon Japanese shipping. Etorofu participated in multiple escort duties, including of the Hi-82 convoy in 1944, where the convoy suffered the loss of 3 tankers to US submarines. Etorofu survived the war and served as a repatriation vessel until being handed over to the US as spoils of war. The USN, in the process of drastically cutting its ship roster, soon scrapped Etorofu.
Trivia
She is named after one of the Kuril islands (now called Iturup by its Russian occupants).
