epaulettes
Epaulettes are the ornamental shoulder pads seen on many military uniforms. Typically seen in soldiers from the Imperial era (1600s - 1800s). Frequently depicted with a fringe trim. The term is derived from a French word for "little shoulders".
For the rectangular strips attached on the shoulder part that bear the mark indicating certain rank or division without fringe trim, see shoulder boards.
