deep impact (racehorse)
As in a "strong impression". Unrelated to the 1998 disaster movie.
Japanese racehorse. Sired by Sunday Silence and foaled by Wind in Her Hair. A bay horse with a small, irregularly-shaped star marking and socks on all but the front left leg.
The first undefeated Japanese Triple Crown winner since Symboli Rudolf and a winner of 7 G1 races. He is also Sunday Silence's successor as Japan's leading sire (2012-2022), with 61 G1-winning progeny and at least a single classics winner in every eligible generation (Japan or Overseas, from 2011 to 2023), from Marcelina (2011 Oka Sho) to Auguste Rodin (2023 Epsom Derby and Irish Derby). He also produced a Triple Tiara and a Triple Crown (Gentildonna and Contrail in 2012 and 2020 respectively.)
Thus, not only he made a "deep impact" on the racetrack, his "ejecta" caused even more damage.
In the context of Umamusume, the real life Deep Impact was an obvious short-lister for the franchise, having made a tentative appearance in the early days of the franchise. However, due to the controversy arising from the franchise's bastardization of King Kamehameha (which share the same owner, the Kaneko stable), he and other horse from the Kaneko stable are unlikely to officially appear.
So far, four of his progeny appears in the franchise: Satono Diamond (2016 Kikuka Sho, Arima Kinen), Verxina (2nd place in all Triple Tiara races in 2012; 2013, 2014 Victoria Mile), Vivlos (2016 Shuka Sho, 2017 Dubai Turf) and Gentildonna (2012 Triple Tiara, 2012, 2013 Japan Cup, 2014 Dubai Sheema, 2014 Arima Kinen).
