common kingfisher
Latin: Alcedo atthis
JP: カワセミ kawasemi
This sparrow-sized kingfisher has blue upperparts and orange underparts, with an orange band from beak to behind the eye that turns into a short white neck-level stripe. Like all kingfishers it has a stubby tail and a long bill contoured for catching fish.
It is a year-round resident in Japan and can be found through much of Europe and Asia.
