catcher's mask

A mask used in baseball designed to protect the catcher from head and facial injuries due to their position on the field. The mask has a cage in the front which is held in place by a tough plastic rim. Older designs are worn over a brimless helmet or backwards cap, but newer designs cover the top of the head as well. Bears some resemblance to the modern hockey mask.
