brazilian twitter ban
On August 31st, 2024, traffic to the social media site Twitter was blocked by telecom companies in Brazil under orders from the Brazilian supreme court.
The ban occurred as an escalation in a months long conflict between Twitter owner Elon Musk and Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes after Twitter failed to designate a legal representative in Brazil. The feud between the two began in April, 2024 when Moraes issued a court order to Twitter to suspend certain accounts for allegedly spreading hate speech and misinformation. Musk later reversed the account suspensions and refused to comply with the court's orders, accusing them of censorship. After the ban occurred, Brazilian users announced their departure as a result of it, and many made their way to Bluesky.
The ban ended on October 8th, after the social network complied with the court rulings, being released gradually.
The timing of the ban happened to coincide with the popular Worldwide Miku trend, leading to a number of fanart depicting Brazilian Miku and the effects of the ban.
