Avatar: The Last Airbender, often abbreviated ATLA, is a Nickelodeon animated cartoon created by Brian Konietzko and Michael Dante DiMartino.
Synopsis
The story takes place in a world where humans known as benders are able to control and manipulate one of the four elements through martial arts, a practice known as bending.
This world divided into four nations represented by each element: the Water Tribe, Earth Kingdom, Fire Nation, and Air Nomads. Peace between them is kept by the Avatar, a powerful bender who is capable of controlling all four elements and is reincarnated after death.
In ATLA, the world has been at war for a hundred years after the Fire Nation attacked the other nations while the Avatar has mysteriously disappeared. In the present, siblings Sokka and Katara of the Water Tribe find a boy named Aang frozen in an iceberg and discover that he is the current Avatar. They join him on a journey to master all four elements and bring balance to the world.
The story is set in a world primarily influenced by Eastern culture and mythology (as well as Inuit), revolving around the reincarnations of the titular Avatar. It would be the beginning of the Avatar Legends franchise, with its sequel being The Legend of Korra.
Not to be confused with James Cameron's Avatar.
