andromeda (mythology)
In Greek mythology, Andromeda was the princess of Aethiopia. When her mother Cassiopeia boasted that Andromeda was more beautiful than the Nereids (sea nymphs), Poseidon sent a sea monster to destroy Aethiopia as divine punishment. Andromeda was chained to a rock by the sea as a sacrifice to the monster but was saved by the hero Perseus.
