The progenitor of the modern chemist. Alchemists are practitioners of alchemy, or the study of an early, unscientific form of chemistry practiced in the Middle Ages with aims including turning base metals into gold and discovering the elixir of perpetual youth, a universal cure for disease, and a universal solvent.

The Atelier series of video games is designed around this premise, with the main protagonists being alchemists.
