Aoki Uru ("Blue Uru") was a 90s proposed sequel to the 80s epic science fiction anime film Honneamise No Tsubasa.
It was supposed to be set 50 years after the events of Honneamise no Tsubasa.
Due to lack of funds the project never materialized. However, official production art from Gainax still exists.
Gainax has periodically attempted to restart Aoki Uru, such as releasing a 1998 CD with storyboards, an official script, several hundred pieces of art and a 2000 release of a mod to the Microsoft Flight Simulator PC game in Japan.
According to Anno Hideaki some elements from Aoki Uru were also used in the development of the critically acclaimed Neon Genesis Evangelion.
It was announced that Gainax is finally making an anime film of the long-dormant project with a yet unknown release date. Yamaga Hiroyuki is writing and directing the movie with character designs by Sadamoto Yoshiyuki. They both worked together in Honneamise no Tsubasa.
