Uploading duplicate image automatically merges tags

Posted under Bugs & Features

When uploading an image already present on danbooru, the user is presented with a page explaining that the file already exists. "This upload is a duplicate: post #xxxxxx"

The problem is that the tags entered for the new image have been merged with the existing post. This is usually not a problem for correctly sourced duplicate images, e.g. finding an image on pixiv and not realizing it's already on danbooru. However, it is a problem if the source link is wrong - this morning I uploaded an image set, using the browser's back button to easily duplicate tags. On two occasions I forgot to advance the page number in the source link, resulting in tags for the new image being applied to the previous image.

I feel that, rather than merging tags automatically, the duplicate upload page should ask the user if they want to merge the new tags with the existing file. Ideally, it would even list out which tags would be added. If nothing else, the current page should at least warn the user that the tags have been merged, as there is currently no mention of this fact.

I'd like to second this. At the very least, it would help filter out things like character request and artist request tags on posts where the characters and artist are already identified. I've made this mistake several times before.

Sort of, but it would merge the two edits if he uploaded the posts within 15 minutes of each other.

That would only happen if the person who uploaded the original image also uploaded the duplicate, and I don't know why they'd do that.

This is what I was referring to so yes, it can happen. If it was just something that could be fixed with an undo there would be no reason to remove merging.

I removed the automatic merging of tags.

It's easy to merge them manually by copy-pasting them if you want to.

Great, thanks.

Isn't there undo button under history, exactly for this purpose?

One of the issues was that there was absolutely no indication to the user that the tags had been merged. It simply happened, and if the uploader doesn't know to check, the existing post could get eroneous tags. I uploaded an image not too long ago with an incorrect artist tag, not knowing that the image already existed under a different name. So that image briefly had two artist tags, both of which were supposed to represent the same artist.
