Confused on tagging multiple identities

Posted under General

I'm confused about a certain aspect of character tagging, and neither looking at existing practice or at howto:character has really clarified it for me, so I'd like to ask here.

In the series Princess Tutu, the main character Ahiru is actually a duck, who spends most of her time in the form of a girl. The same pendant that lets her stay in girl-form also lets her transform to an alternate identity, Princess Tutu.

The way the majority of the images appear to be tagged is as follows:

  • All images that have Ahiru in any form are tagged with Ahiru.
  • All images where Ahiru appears in duck form are additionally tagged Ahiru (duck).
  • All images where Ahiru appears as Princess Tutu are additionally tagged Princess Tutu (character).

If this is correct tagging procedure, then what happens when someone wants to search for images of Ahiru in girl-form? It seems they have two less-than-optimal options: they can search through every picture tagged Ahiru, including all the false positives that only contain Ahiru in her duck or Princess Tutu forms; or, they can search "Ahiru -Ahiru_(duck) -Princess_Tutu_(character)" and miss all the pictures that have Ahiru in girl form and one of the other two forms as well.

My instinct is to think there should be an Ahiru_(girl) tag for clarity, but I'm far from certain about that.

SPOILERS kthnx

I hope that was a joke. If it wasn't, everything I revealed is part of the very basic premise of the show; it's all revealed in the first episode (and all except the slow will figure it out just from the OP sequence.) "Spoilers" are generally considered not to include anything the creators are trying to make obvious from the very beginning.

[Admin edit: removed spoiler that went in this next paragraph. It wasn't necessary to make your point, tagged or not.]

[Original poster edit: The "spoiler" you're referring to wasn't a spoiler, because none of it was true. It was the equivalent of saying "The big surprise at the end of The Sixth Sense is ... the butler did it!" It was an attempt to show that if Kikimaru's "SPOILERS kthnx" was a joke, then I could play along.

If I had known beforehand that Danbooru doesn't want people even joking about spoilers, then I would not have given Kikimaru the benefit of the doubt that he might be joking. I would have just told him that next time he might want to be more careful before rudely SHOUTING IN ALL CAPS an accusation that, as has been pointed out, simply Googling a plot summary would have revealed to be an unjustified accusation kthnx.]

Just to be absolutely clear, spoilers are never joked about on danbooru. about:spoilers should help you understand if you haven't read it before.

In that case, I suggest we amend about:spoilers to make it absolutely clear that even when the creators want you to know a certain piece of information by the end of the OP sequence, it's still a spoiler. That's not what most people understand "spoilers" to mean; they need warning.

It also complicates the problem of character tagging, which no one has addressed yet, because every image that only shows Princess Tutu and yet is tagged both Ahiru and Princess Tutu (character) gives away the spoiler that they are the same person.

Er, no, you're taking what I said too far. I was just emphasizing that if someone on danbooru challenges you about a spoiler, they really mean it and are not joking.

Whether Kirimaru is right in his complaint is a separate issue and one I can't enter into since I've never watched Princess Tutu. I think it's generally accepted that the first episode of a 12 episode series will not have spoilers in it, but it depends and I'm just saying that no, you don't need to ask if he's joking, so cut straight to your counter-argument.

If the character has three distinct appearances, it seems appropriate for there to be a tag for each of them. +1 to ahiru_(girl).

And I don't think something that happens in the first episode and is listed in plot summaries (like this) would usually be considered a spoiler (although it may depend on the circumstances).

Oh, right, yeah back on topic, konpaku_youmu_(ghost) is another example, one character, 2 chartags if both the human and spirit part of her are in the image. The about page probably does need to be updated; the cosplay part of it was off/out of date I updated that so I doubt it's been updated to include decisions on youmu-like characters and alt-personas.
