Yours has better quality. The older version is full of JPEG artifacts. I reversed the parenting.

Originally I was getting just a grey bar across the top and some text after submitting the flag from the pop-up. I just test-flagged post #96073 and post #23513 but they took this time so I can't reproduce the error.

Made a mistake and uploaded a version with a smaller resolution. However, I'm still not sure if the image should be uplaoded after that because it is - despite being an official alternate design by the character designer - just a photo of a sketch. I hope someone can clarify it for me.
Or should I just leave it and upload the bigger resolution as a parent?

If they're obviously badly drawn in general it should be fine.
