Edit: I can't approve this BUR despite being under the 200 post limit. So I guess I'll just figure something else out.

You can just do a simple rename, since both artists have less than 200 posts. (Not that you'd be able to do anything if one of them were 200+...) Only admins can remove aliases, and the create/remove trick is unnecessary for this.

Yeah, turns out the artist I was thinking of using it for has another name I could use instead anyway. So I'll just edit the BUR to be a rename.

Wait, it's all just the same artist! So it all worked out in the end!
