Should there be an alias here, preferrably to crescent, which is simpler? At first I though these might be different, with crescent_moon for an actual crescent moon in the sky and crescent for the symbol in general. crescent_moon really just seems to be used mostly for the symbol currently and is used more often.
It's also half Patchu, heh. Well, I'm okay with either tag. I mean, even when it's not actually the moon it's generally something that's intended to be taking on the shape of a crescent moon, right?

I have added lots of crescent_moons lately, both to Patchouli pics and some night-sky ones. I took it for granted that Patchy's hat ornament was a straight reference to the corresponding celestial body.
(To be honest, I do not even quite understand the difference between crescent and crescent moon, since I do not know the etymology of crescent. My mother tongue calls the crescent moon "moon-sickle", yet I would hardly confuse a crescent moon symbol with a sickle symbol.) ^^
In art and symbolism, a crescent is generally the shape produced when a circular disk has a segment of another circle removed from its edge, so that what remains is a shape enclosed by two circular arcs of different diameters which intersect at two points (usually in such a manner that the enclosed shape does not include the center of the original circle).
In astronomy, a crescent is the shape of the lit side of a spherical body (most notably the Moon) that appears to be less than half illuminated by the Sun as seen by the viewer.
A lot of the uses so far are of the symbol (like with Patchouli's ornament). The crescent generally symbolizes the moon in my mind, so nothing wrong with crescent_moon as the tag, but I just thought one word would be better as it's simpler (not that there's much difference in amount of letters to type, though...)

Supported.
Personally, I would like crescent moon ornaments and actual crescent moons to be under the same tag. And I find it hard to imagine that there would be a party of "We Want Our Non-Moon Crescent Shapes Separated" enthusiasts on the board. (But you never know unless you give them some time to react...)
I'm pretty sure there was a debate on the star thing in particular, back in the singular vs. plural thread. It would take a lot of time to separate out all the actual stars from star symbols. I tend to make use of night_sky or space tags to narrow things down.
Well if we stick with just crescent, and do crescent + moon when it really is the moon, as Log suggests, that's fine. But then do we keep crescent_moon as a tag? It would seem incorrect to alias it to crescent if we're separating the ideas.
I've cleaned up crescent_moon and crescent, added moon when the celestial body in the sky is there, removed moon when not, so we may finally decide what to do with the 2 tags.
crescent_moon moon shows images with the real crescent moon, but it also shows images with a crescent symbol AND a full moon or crescent moon in the same picture. crescent is the same. post #397762 = example of crescent and moon referring to 2 different objects.
For Log's suggestion, if we cannot alias crescent_moon to crescent because of the "moon" in its name, we could instead mass edit them to crescent.
Another way would be to use crescent only for the symbol and crescent_moon only for the real moon. So images with the symbol AND the real moon would have both tags to carry that information. For that, all crescent_moon -moon images would have to be edited to crescent and the rest must be checked for symbol + real moon.

+1.
We shouldn't confuse the symbol and the actual moon.
Strictly speaking, the moon is taggable object, the celestial body revolving about our Earth. A crescent describes an abstract geometric formation. A crescent moon is the intersection of these two concepts. Our ontology loosely supports this intersection through compounding the two tags into a separate object: crescent_moon.
