Characters with the same name

Posted under General

What should we do about two characters that have the same name? Should they be delimited in any way?

For example, Konoha is a character name from both Arcana Heart and Shinrabansho, and neither has a last name.

I suppose that they can be delimited by adding arcana_heart or shinranbansho to your search, but should there be any way to tell them apart just by their character tag?

Honestly, this is just what I do. Add anther tag to my search to distinguish them. Even if you only know the name, it's not hard to look at a few pics and see which one you want and add the series tag to your search accordingly.

There are a few cases where you'll see things like a series name in parentheses. but the parentheses are a... less than optimal solution, as most of us seem to agree. However, they're necessary in some cases. For something like an artist, there's no good way to add another tag and automatically disambiguate them. For characters, I don't like to do the parentheses thing, but if it's already in use for a character I go along with it.

We *do* have an ambiguous tags function, but to be perfectly honest I've never actually looked closely to see how it works, and it seems to be used on only a very small number of tags. Maybe I should look at that.

Rhe new ambiguious tag links to a search of *tag* which would make it possible to add character_(series) but I would still find it easier to just search for character+series.

Asuka is a good example of why the format was changed.

More important question: What do we do when an artist has the same name as a character?

This has usually been handled by adding _(artist) to the name in addition to the artist: prefix. Another alternative would be to choose an alias name for the artist (nickname instead of real name, or vice versa). I've gone with the first option in most cases.

Or add the circle that they belong to, if that's available.

I think this one has usually been used to distinguish two artists with identical names.

And yes, if an artist shares a name with the character, the character takes priority and the artist gets _(artist). Minami Haruka (artist, but also Minami-ke character) is a recent example of this happening.
