Reference work tagging

Posted under General

So I was looking at the reference_photo tag and I noticed that the tagging is in a bit of a mess. This is the situation:

  • There's a reference_photo tag, used for photos that are used as a reference.
  • There's a reference tag, also used for things that are used as a reference.
  • There's pool #829 ("Reference Works"), which is used for posts that are based on a reference.

I was starting to detag reference from reference_photos (since it was redundant) and use it for posts based on references (since they don't have a tag), but then I noticed we already had pool #829.

However, there's no reason for this to be a pool instead of a tag. It's a misnomer anyway to call posts that use a reference "Reference Works".

So with all this in mind, I would like to do the following:

I tagged everything in pool:Reference_Works and plagiarism as derivative_work. Also dredged up some other untagged plagiarism/trace jobs and tagged those. Someone with a good idea for photo traces might want to go through realistic to find things that are proven traces.

Posts used as references or that have been plagiarized from are tagged as reference_work. This includes photos as well as drawings.

I would like for plagiarism to be aliased to derivative_work. Sometimes it's hard to tell whether a work is truly plagiarized or just heavily derivative. I think it's easiest to just call them all derivative works.

I agree here but want to see if anyone has a good argument against before doing the alias (since it results in lost info)
