Too many VirtuaReal Link copytags

Posted under Tags

BUR #38420 is pending approval.

create alias andou_inari_official -> virtuareal_link
create alias sumire_hina_official -> virtuareal_link
create alias mitsusa_official -> virtuareal_link
create alias karon_official -> virtualreal_link
create alias azusa_official -> virtuareal_link
create alias nox_official -> virtuareal_link
create alias ruruna_official -> virtuareal_link
create alias kero_official -> virtuareal_link
create alias joi_official -> virtuareal_link
create alias susam_official -> virtuareal_link
create implication virtuareal_link -> virtuareal

So basically the issue here is essentially every VirtuaReal Link channel has their own copytag. I can see how this would happen, VirtuaReal Link is an affiliation program and these vtubers are actually in charge of their own channels and own the IP rights to their character and such, but I don't think this is a good way of doing this. We generally don't create a copytag for each virtual youtuber, Indie Virtual Youtuber exists for that purpose.

Given that, I think we have two ways of going about this. Either we alias all the various *_official VirtuaReal Link copytags to Indie Virtual Youtuber, or we have a VirtuaReal Link copytag specifically for them. I'm more in favor of the second one since I've never actually heard of anyone leaving VirtuaReal Link, but I can make both BURs.

Well, this case is literally why the last point in the Indie Virtual YouTuber wiki exists:

If the indie Virtual YouTuber(s) in question is:

  • under a corporate support group (i.e. VirtuaReal Link, etc.), depending on the circumstance, they receive their own copyright tag, due to the nature of their affiliation with said corporate entity and the potential for them to just leave it if they wanted to;

But in the time since, we've seen project upd8's tagging on the matter change, where the indies that were a part of the support group ultimately getting the copytag during that tenture at upd8, so maybe it's time to retire that rule.

But I don't know if the first BUR is appropriate given cases such as andou_inari_official -virtuareal.

The primary issue IMO is that having a copytag for every individual channel (or bilibili space or whatever you call it) is unnecessary. All of these channels have 1 vtuber. Essentially the copytag is serving the role of a character tag despite the fact that we already have character tags for everyone. It creates unnecessary tagging requirements and doesn't really have any benefits for users.

The fundamental question here is whether these characters interact with each other to the point where it'd be warranted to group them under the same copyright. If not, then there's no reason for them to be under a single copytag. Do they have regular collabs together? Do they stream video games together? Etc.
Online resources aren't clear whether these vtubers are really under Virtualink or whether it's just legal/technical support with no other brand interaction.
