While there's that, the world at large unambiguously uses "United States" to refer to the United States of America. I feel as though calling "United States" ambiguous gets on a level of technicalities that are not really necessary for Danbooru-related purposes. No one is trying to find any of those additionally listed contents, or anything else for that matter, if they're searching just for "United States".

I wouldn't say just "United States" is as universal as you make it seem. And while nobody is trying to find those other united states, that doesn't take away from united_states being a poor tag name, especially when the full name is more correct and also perfectly fine as a tag.

I must live in a bubble then because I'm truly unaware of any other spaces where this isn't the case. I'm used to seeing either "United States" or "USA" and both are always in reference to the United States of America. I'm also sort of "meh" on it being a poor tag name - why so? That's the main thing I'm wondering.

If we'd prefer to take the route of using the full name over common parlance then I guess but I'm particularly meh about it. There's a lot of other countries' tags that we don't use the full name of, so I don't see the angle on why the United States is treated differently.

Both of these are solutions looking for a problem and the Wikipedia page makes that pretty clear with the United States of America is the primary meaning of United States and all other alternatives are simply a "may refer to." But even then there is only 1 single country that they list as possibly referring to that actually still exists today alongside the US and all it takes it actually clicking the link to the "United States of Mexico" to realize it's not even in the running: Mexico, officially the United Mexican States, is a country in the southern portion of North America.

Going down the list of these ambiguous alternatives:

  • United States of Belgium which Wikipedia uses United Belgian States: short-lived confederal republic that existed from January to December 1790, so not even a full year.
  • United States of Brazil which Wikipedia uses First Brazilian Republic and states "officially the Republic of the United States of Brazil." Existed 1889 to 1930.
  • United States of Central America which Wikipedia uses Greater Republic of Central America. A short-lived political union between El Salvador, Honduras, and Nicaragua from 1896 to 1898. From September 15, 1896 to October 1, 1898 was called Greater Republic of Central America. It was rechristened the "United States of Central America" when its constitution came into effect on November 1, 1898, but the union dissolved effective November 29, 1898. As such the United States of Central America naming only existed for 29 days.
  • United States of Colombia, existed from 1863 to 1886.
  • United States of Indonesia, existed from December 27, 1949 until August 17, 1950; not even a full year.
  • United States of the Ionian Islands, existed from 1815 to 1864.
  • United States of Stellaland, a small southern African state that existed as the Republic of Stellaland from 1882–1883 and as United States of Stellaland from 1883–1885. Wikipedia just uses Stellaland covering the entirety of the state's short existence.
  • United States of Venezuela, the official name of Venezuela from 1864 to 1953. The country's official name prior since 1858 was "Republic of Venezuela" and in 1953 they again changed their name back to "Republic of Venezuela." In 1999 they again changed their name to "Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela."
