While I have no idea how the cosplay issue would be resolved, would a straight-up custom_mita_(miside) tag work for the former?

Yeah it's a damned if we do damned if we don't issue. Having the umbrella is bloat, but unfortunately there's just too many edge cases that would end up with no chartags, which is worse as it makes no sense in the context of this site imo, or ad-hoc frankenstein solutions that are even uglier.
