broken tumblr media asset?

Posted under General

it's supposed to be animated and have multiple characters one after another, but it's only the first frame with ishmael seemingly. why
trying to upload it through the post link doesn't work (it's like this for this whole account)

edit: nevermind, i think it's extension weirdness. i tried uploading through the tumblr media link manually and it worked just fine: https://danbooru.donmai.us/media_assets/24180310 . but then again regular nonanimated images get the full size just fine...

My initial guess would be .gif versus .gifv (tumblr unfortunately auto-converts almost all .gif uploads to .gifv, but you can access the original .gif file by removing the v at the end of the URL), but it also looks like the initial grab got a compressed version of the file for some reason?

"compressed version" yeah, that's one of the weird parts: static images get converted to full size even if the link is small, but this animated one didn't... but only when i used the extension, i used the exact same link manually and it was fine

to be honest, this extension works kind of weirdly with tumblr in general. it's pretty much perfect with twitter, but for tumblr it only corrects to the source the way it should if you're directly on the post's page, if you're on a blog's main page it grabs the media url, and if you're technically at the wrong post, just after scrolling down to see other posts, it'll change the source to the wrong post

Tumblr is a weird and unloved site, I say as a tumblr denizen of over a decade. I imagine tumblr's somewhat controversial change to kinda force ppl into tumblr.com/blog-url instead of blog-url.tumblr.com (but only sometimes) may be throwing something off with the extension.

The tumblr extractor also has the problem where it only retrieves what can technically be considered samples. Obtaining the full version requires a blog export, which is a hassle, and since often they're near-identical quality or even pixel-perfect duplicates it's not worth the effort. Maybe that causes problems in this specific instance though.

i don't think it's the blog view problem, some accounts on tumblr are set up so they can only be viewed when logged in. this specific artist is one of those blogs
