Rename tire to unused_tire

create alias tire -> unused_tire
create implication spare_tire -> unused_tire
remove alias tire -> unused_tire
deprecate tire

The tire tag is an ambiguous name because it appears to be used for unused tires, but people also use it for any vehicle with tires, making the tag look unnecessary like the headlight tag that was deprecated a few months ago.

The spare tire tag is a tire that is attached to a vehicle to serve as a replacement for one that goes flat, has a blowout, or has another emergency. So, in some way, the tire is still unused, but it's just attached to a vehicle.

Does a tire swing count as an unused tire? (Right now tire is tagged on about 1/3 of tire swing posts.)

I feel like "unused" is not an ideal word to use, might sound like it wouldn't apply in cases we'd want the tag. But I can't think of something better so far. I guess it's like unworn_* so hopefully people would make that connection..

I personally think that you can remove the tire tag from tire swing posts because the tire serves as the seat, so not unused.

I think it's easier to reason about the application of detached tire for tires that are out in the wild than it is for unused tire. "Unused", as you pointed out in the thread, could mean a stray tire or also a spare tire. Detached tire sounds like it would be less prone to mistags. I have no way to prove this is true, it's just my own thoughts if I were to be tagging tires in an image.

That being said, I personally like the name stray tire more, since that's a little less ambiguous than either detached or unused. So when I'm tagging and trying to find out which tire tag to use, it might be a bit more obvious when there's three major choices presented to me: tire swing (swing with a tire as the seat), spare tire (an unused extra tire resting on the side of a vehicle) and stray tire (a tire not attached to anything; a lone wolf).

I like detached tire a little more than unused tire but stray tire more than both. It's possible this take could be stupid. I'll let you decide.

I like both "detached" and "stray" better than "unused". Between the two, I'm not sure, but I think I lean towards "detached". In post #6782025 for example those tires aren't really "stray" and are being used in a way but not attached to a wheel.

Stray may be less ambiguous, but it might leave out some posts. To some it might have a connotation of being in the middle of nowhere and not e.g. in a shop.

There are also several posts currently tagged tire where the tire is attached to a wheel but the wheel is not attached to a vehicle. Dunno if we want a separate detached_wheel or something...

For this reason I favour detached.
Stray tire to me feels like it has potential to be it's own tag for exactly that, for tires in places where tires really shouldn't be.

Additionally, my first reaction to seeing the tire tag was an immediate thought that it would be completely pointless to have it as is, siince it feels like it calls to be used on any post that has tires (which isn't very helpful, even in a negation search to find vehicles without tires, such posts probably need their own tag).

Fair enough, I can see it from that angle too as either not having enough coverage or even being able to be its own taggable concept. Probably though I imagine stray tire, if existing as a standalone tag, will likely get marred with mistags of the other options. If we have to keep the general concept concise, given the above examples and context, I still hold - before bringing up stray tire - that I like detached tire more than unused tire.
