Does anyone have any experience with getting a Baidu account outside of China?

There's a few full size images and videos that I have backlogged from Baidu but creating an account is incredibly tricky. I have a WeChat account however they also require me to verify my phone number again to activate a Baidu account. I can't seem to verify it with my English phone number and face immediate 24-hour rate limits even if I only attempt registration once.

You need a chinese phone number. There's probably several ways to get one from the west, the easiest being to know somebody who lives in the mainland. But I'm sure there are grey market services you could use to purchase one.

Oh damn. I saw a few people say they were able to register with an overseas phone number but things probably changed between then and now. There is an overseas registration portal but it's disabled (and sort of hidden away). That's a shame but makes sense. Will probably have to put those on hold for now.

Baidu overseas account registration: https://passport.baidu.com/v2/?reg&overseas=1

The fields to fill in are:

  • Phone number
  • Username (can't be changed later, up to 14 English character or 7 Chinese characters)
  • Password (8-14 characters, at least 2 out of letters/numbers/symbols, no spaces or Chinese characters)
  • Confirmation code (sent to your phone after clicking the button to the right)

Checkbox for the usual agree to sell your soul and your children to the corporate overlords

If your country isn't listed in the country code list for the phone number you have to edit the HTML to add it (this worked for me back when I registered my account).

Instructions
  • Select any country code other than +86 out of the list
  • Right-click on the country code, select "Inspect"
  • In the HTML inspector there should be a line of code highlighted:
<span id="TANGRAM__PSP_4__foreignMobileLabel" class="pass-foreign-label" data-countrycode="00852">+852</span>
  • Double-click the number next to data-countrycode and replace it with your country code (use two zeroes instead of +)
  • Press enter to confirm. The country code that is displayed on the site won't change but that is purely cosmetical.
  • You can now close the HTML inspector by clicking the small X button in the top right
  • Click the button to get the confirmation code

It seems I must've missed my opportunity to grab an account since this doesn't seem to work. Attempting to register presents me with the error "暂不支持海外及港澳台地区注册" (seems to say registration overseas, in HK, Macau and TW are not supported "yet") My country code is there for what it's worth.

Oof, looks like I'm SOL on this as well: "您当前的操作存在安全风险,请稍后再试"
Multiple browsers, VPN, different devices, all produce the same error. Phone verification is a pain...
