more parent footwear implications; silver boots absent as it is below 47 posts
I should mention that we should probably do something about sneakers (67K). White sneakers (691), high heel sneakers (104), red sneakers (2), black sneakers (1) and green sneakers (1) exist. I mentioned that they could probably be folded into just shoes to avoid too much granularity but not sure what to do with the main tag with it having a substantial number of posts.

How should footwear that doesn't fall into the shoe/boot/sandal/slipper categories be tagged? So far I've come across ice/roller skates and flippers and I'm not sure what to do about them since they don't have many posts to begin with.
I would tag skates as either boots or shoes depending on how high they are. There are cases where they're ankle boots, knee boots, thigh boots, and in rare cases even sandals. See roller_skates knee_boots, roller_skates sandals, etc. They're like high heels in that skates can be added to a number of different types of footwear.
For flippers frankly I wouldn't tag the color at all. Just because it exists doesn't mean we need to tag the color of it. It's a stretch to use footwear color tags on them to begin with. It's like using eyewear color tags on diving masks.

Should certain subcategories of shoes implicate their umbrella term? e.g. geta, waraji implicating sandals, as okobo and zouri already does.
In general, yes, but geta is a topic unto itself because of Aya's nontraditional/adapted geta.

undeprecate untied_footwear
create alias untied_footwear -> untied_shoelaces
Rather than splitting up untied footwear into different types of footwear, I think it makes more sense to tag the laces themselves.
Note that a lot of these are lace-up boots or sneakers that are missing the tag. See untied_footwear -lace-up_boots -sneakers.

mass update toeless_footwear boots solo -shoes -sandals -> open-toe_boots -toeless_footwear
mass update toeless_footwear shoes solo -boots -sandals -> open-toe_shoes -toeless_footwear
mass update toeless_footwear sandals solo -boots -shoes -> -toeless_footwear
create alias toeless_boots -> open-toe_boots
create alias toeless_shoes -> open-toe_shoes
create alias peep-toe_boots -> open-toe_boots
create alias peep-toe_shoes -> open-toe_shoes
Replacing toeless footwear with open-toe boots and open-toe shoes. "Open-toe", "open-toed", or "peep-toe" are more common terms for this than "toeless".
Open-toe sandals aren't a thing because sandals aren't expected to cover the toes. Tagging sandals as toeless footwear was wrong.
