Destroying footwear

BUR #32462 has been rejected.

Nothing especially complicated going on here, though there are a few things that need explaining.

• Footwear that get color tags should be unique enough to be one level below just "footwear", such as shoes or boots. For example, don't make brown_loafers or white_sneakers, just tag brown_shoes loafers or white_shoes sneakers. Currently, the footwear I've identified that fit this criteria are shoes, boots, sandals, slippers, and skates.

• While a vast majority of the *_footwear tags need to go, a small amount of them (asymmetrical_footwear, for example) are exceptions and should remain untouched.

• geta is excluded from these searches because while they are objectively a type of sandal, the tag contains weird stuff like post #2251996. Exceptions such as this should really be moved to tags like geta_shoes so that geta can imply sandals, but currently that's not the case, so it's best to simply exclude them from any blanket mass edits.

• gradient_footwear exists, but it has just over 150 posts and therefore can be gardened manually rather than clogging up this initial BUR with another 14 lines.

Whoops, seems like I forgot to write that part. My bad.

Just like with the neckwear, headwear, and legwear tags, these footwear tags are less useful for searching whilst also causing tens of thousands of posts to not be tagged with the type of footwear. For example, there are almost 80,000 posts in the black_footwear -shoes -boots -sandals -slippers -skates search alone.

I think the existence of footwear tags causes shoes in particular to be under tagged, but there are also instances where the footwear doesn't neatly fit into any of those categories due to fantasy nonsense or because the art is too chibi and simple it's impossible to determine what the character is actually wearing outside of the color. post #7245010 or post #4838877

Would your tagging policy if they are to be deprecated be when in doubt tag shoes? What would I tag post #8286410 with?

Users are already tagging extremely low-detail chibi footwear as shoes, so I don't see a problem with continuing to do that.

post #8286410 looks like some weird fantasy platform sandals, but I know what you mean. On a related note, the other *wear BURs were also approved despite this point being applicable to them too (forum #209958, forum #216335, forum #273512). I imagine it's because a making a handful of indeterminate garments unable to be searched by color is far superior to literally tens of thousands of completely identifiable garments constantly going untagged.

These are all of the *_footwear tags with over 500 posts that aren't about color, excluding afore-mentioned exceptions (stirrup_legwear, uneven_legwear and so on). Some of these tags don't apply to all kinds of footwear, so to be easier to read, this BUR is grouped by attribute rather than type of footwear.

Since the other *wear BUR are approved I'm not really against this one. One concern I have that is related to the way footwear are tagged is that, shoes is still a really big catch-all tag for a lot of distinctive footwears that look nothing alike. Putting similar styles of shoes like loafers, mary janes, oxfords is alright but anything from crocs, dress shoes, sneakers, high heels, geta, etc. is a bit odd.

It's not a catch-all tag so much as a catch-all word, which is something you can blame on the English language. A large amount of footwear styles really are just referred to as "shoes".

That's fair, but now that we're moving the colored footwear tags, there're a lot of smaller/more unique footwear tags that doesn't imply any umbrella tag atm, do we make colored tags for them or make them imply one of the umbrellas? If the former, will that be weird for users that, say, crocs have their own set of colored tags while the others have to share the colored shoes together? Would it be more convenient if we break colored shoes into smaller families? On the other hand I do hold the same concern as everyone else that it might lead to hundreds of new tags and flood the site, so I don't know how to feel about the idea.

Crocs are a unique case, as it's debated even outside of Danbooru as to whether they're shoes, sandals, or clogs. In cases like this where they don't neatly fit into any parent tag, I'd say color tags are fine.

As for breaking up shoes into smaller color subtags, I strongly disagree with this approach. That would be like tagging white_t-shirt, blue_crop_top, orange_camisole, black_dress_shirt and so on instead of just color_shirt.
