As "giant catfish" is a real type of catfish, we should probably add a qualifier to giant catfish.

_(mythology) feels like a bad qualifier, since the tag seems to be for the one appearing in touhou.

Then the Touhou one should get its own character tag i.e. namazu_(touhou). Then namazu_(mythology), namazu_(touhou), namazu_(final_fantasy) can co-exist

that does make me think, when do we need a generic mythological tag vs a specific series tag? i started thinking about this during the baphomet discussion but in this case, the touhou fish is just meant to be the mythological fish, does it need to exist? i.e. just search namazu touhou and every pic would be it. in this case, would you tag both namazu_(touhou) and namazu_(mythology) on every image, despite being the same "thing"?

separate but related, does it even need to be a character tag? we have tsuchinoko and amabie as gentags despite both of them being unique creatures (not generic-ish youkai like karakasa obake), should it be moved to that?

The touhou character is not meant to just be the fish. It's a being seemingly specific to the dream world, it has recurring specific appearances with the same abilities, and even has dialogue, which is more than can be said of some named characters.
