It's a common alternative name. It shares the same meaning with femboy I think.

Tomgirl would carry the same connontation as tomboy i.e. the subject should be doing things strongly associated with the opposite gender. For Otoko no ko, the man just needs to look sufficiently feminine to tagged as such, regardless of action.

That's why it's an alias, falls under the same umbrella. You can rarely even tell from posts that are usually just 1 image.
Also instead of redirecting to nothing it'd point to the thing you're trying to find.

Just found out there's a girly boy tag, why doesn't tomgirl points to that?

I see you modified your BUR to add it. I agree with tomgirl -> girly_boy, but in the future it'd probably be best to have just created a new BUR since now you have a bunch of downvotes for an alias you no longer are trying to do.

For the record, I recall NNT mentioning that BURs edited like this after they get votes won't be approved, for the reason you are describing, so a new BUR would definitely be necessary.

I've looked at how other hentai sites use these tags. I've compared the results on Rule34 between tomgirl and trap, and the results were very similar. Nhentai and Exhentai refer to otoko no ko as tomgirl. Because these are fetish tags, I think it makes sense for tomgirl to alias how we tag otoko no ko.

I've remade the BUR because the original changed, and I provided my reasoning above. I don't think tomgirl should be aliased to girly boy because people not familiar with Danbooru will think we use tomgirl to refer to otoko no ko and tag it like that.

I believe the term is simply too ambiguous to have as an alias.
Consider that the wiktionary entry offers two definitions which have opposite meanings.
The fact that it's used on other sites is a compelling case but perhaps just a wiki entry listing the possible meanings would suffice.
