Decoupling the ring-con from Ring Fit Adventure

Posted under Tags

BUR #25991 has been rejected.

mass update ring_fit_adventure -favgroup:31980 -> -ring_fit_adventure

The ring-con is a controller designed specifically for Ring Fit Adventure and has not been used for any other game, so it makes sense to tag posts with it and the leg strap accessory with the copyright tag. However, this comes at a cost.

The majority of Ring Fit Adventure posts show people exercising with the ring-con without showing anything from the actual game. I created a favgroup containing all of the references to the parts from the video game I could find and determined that less than 1/3 of all Ring Fit Adventure posts have these references. The fact that mere exercise with a ring-con is enough to qualify for the copyright tag makes it harder to filter them out to find actual video game references.

My proposal is to remove Ring Fit Adventure from any post that does not contain the characters, setting, cosplay, game mechanics, box art, or parodies of these. The ring-con tag can still be used to find people merely exercising with it, so the copyright tag shouldn't be necessary to find them.

Before passing this BUR, we'll have to make sure all posts tagged with Ring Fit Adventure also have the ring-con and joy-con tags when applicable. We may also want to consider making a leg strap (Ring Fit Adventure) tag since the leg strap is somewhat distinguishable from others, especially when there is a joy-con inside it. This will help keep those posts searchable even without the copyright tag. And, of course, we need make sure no posts with game references are missing from the favgroup. I already did all of the above once, but it's possible I missed some.

It should be noted that ring-con currently does not imply Ring Fit Adventure.

That's the problem, the ring-con is specifically designed for Ring Fit Adventure. It doesn't make much sense to me to decouple it from the game if it's a feature of the game.

Is there any existing precedence for using the copyright tag with peripherals designed only for one game? The only one I can think of are the controllers used for Guitar Hero, but they don't have a unique tag. One reason I thought removing the copyright tag would be feasible for ring-con posts was because of this unique situation.

On the other hand, it occurred to me recently that some users might know what Ring Fit Adventure is but not know what the peripherals are called. Removing the copyright tag would thus make it harder for them to find it. And I have a feeling more users would be more interested in searching for their favorite characters working out than searching for characters from the actual game. Either way, someone's going to get the short end of the stick.

Maybe there's another way. I could create a collection pool with the posts in the favgroup. That way, users can still find Ring Fit Adventure posts that are not just generic exercise posts without any change being made to the tags.

If there are no objections or better ideas, I'll create the pool in a couple days.
