Isn't that a bit backwards? Sailor Moon is the name of the character, not the series. If anything, it's the other qualifiers that should be changed for accuracy. It's not right for the copyright to be named Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon and for the qualifier to be just "Sailor Moon".

Most folks generally refer to the franchise as just Sailor Moon, and when possible we want to use the most accessible shortened form for the qualifier. Additionally, we have many similar cases of the qualifier for a series being identical with a character tag, ala Rayman (ex. Betilla (Rayman)), due to said series (whether full name or shorthand) being identical too.

Just mentioning that there's also precedent with characters like luna (sailor moon), artemis (sailor moon), etc.
