remove alias scales -> skin_scales
create alias fish_scales -> skin_scales
create alias reptile_scales -> skin_scales
deprecate scales

less ambiguous and easier to find

Though scales do grow out of animals' skin and many of these posts are humanlike, that sounds retarded.

How about something like:

• scales (anatomy) (like Wikipedia)
• scales (animal)
• scales (biological)

I also think it would be too hard to find or use if you removed the alias from scales, even though there's a risk a scale balance might be referred to as plural "scales". We should also keep the alias to not break people's existing workflows that might use the tag.

FWIW, other animals that have scales include birds (avian scales), mammals (pangolins, kangaroos, squirrels), and arthropods (butterflies, moths, spiders). But fish and reptiles are certainly the most common.

scaly_skin gets the point across quite clearly without any ugly qualifiers.

I know that such images are very unlikely to end up here, but "scaly skin" is best known for being a medical condition people suffer and thus comes off as a poor choice for naming. At least the qualified names would not suffer from that association.

Adding on to that, "scaly skin" to me implies a much higher coverage than what the tag is mostly used for, see Yanfei or Au Ra.

Small patches of scaly skin is still scaly skin.

I thought the tag is for partial coverage of scales on normal skin so having "skin" somewhere might be useful. At least it needs the alias, cause I searched fish scales and was genuinely confused when nothing showed up.

I've added it as a utility alias to my BUR.

Keep in mind removed scales and worn scales in the existing posts that may need to use separate tags

Also don't deprecate scales
