Though scales do grow out of animals' skin and many of these posts are humanlike, that sounds retarded.
How about something like:
I also think it would be too hard to find or use if you removed the alias from scales, even though there's a risk a scale balance might be referred to as plural "scales". We should also keep the alias to not break people's existing workflows that might use the tag.
FWIW, other animals that have scales include birds (avian scales), mammals (pangolins, kangaroos, squirrels), and arthropods (butterflies, moths, spiders). But fish and reptiles are certainly the most common.

scaly_skin gets the point across quite clearly without any ugly qualifiers.
I thought the tag is for partial coverage of scales on normal skin so having "skin" somewhere might be useful. At least it needs the alias, cause I searched fish scales and was genuinely confused when nothing showed up.
