Bear trap is more sound and convenient compared to foothold trap, it's basically the same thing, I really doubt anyone thinks of foothold trap instead of bear trap whenever it's searched for, it's just more confusion

Especially with the case of the new touhou character mitsugashira_enoko taking 40% of all bear trap related posts, which would help new users find her art that way

Bear traps are a specific type of foothold trap (which are in turn a type of animal trap) with all the mean-looking teeth designed to incapacitate such a huge creature. However in modern times the term "bear trap" is much more popular to describe anything metal that snaps shut on an animal's leg, regardless of teeth or mechanism. There are 169,000,000 for bear trap, and 923,000 results for foothold trap on Google.

I doubt anyone but hunters or hunting enthusiasts have even heard of the term foothold trap before, so it would make for a poor main tag. But I would prefer an alias over a rename so said enthusiasts aren't encouraged to create it again.

When you google foothold trap the type of imagery is particularly of the type of trap that lacks teeth, while beartrap is pretty much always the type with teeth. Given the teethed version is always going to be the dominant depiction, it could be worthwhile retaining foothold trap for the toothless version that would be the minority (ex: post #3252605).
