Back in topic #18122, it was brought up that sometimes these umbrella tags are the only usable ones when you can infer (or the artist stated) that the protagonist has a presence in the image (such as the POV character, or disembodied limbs), but their gender isn't identifiable.
post #4370862 was given as an FGO example; the command spell and the commentary make it pretty clear that the POV character is either fujimaru ritsuka (male) or fujimaru ritsuka (female).

As mentioned in that topic though, images like this are pretty rare.
These umbrella tags for gender-selectable characters may have also been discussed at some other point since, and I missed the memo.

Yeah, I said it again in topic #21928 also. I don't really see the harm of such an umbrella tag because it covers an (admittedly niche) use case where you wouldn't exactly know which gender protagonist to tag, but still have to tag the protagonist character. It's also more convenient to use than adding "~female_protagonist ~male_protagonist" to your search if you want pictures that include the protagonist but don't care which gender protagonist; after a nuke a regular user wouldn't be able to search for art of March 7th + either protag, as they are capped to 2 tags, and would have to do it in several separate searches.
We also do have such an umbrella for Byleth (Fire Emblem) (and potentially other FE characters?) which serves much that same purpose afaik.
