Deprecate fashion, for real.

BUR #16705 has been rejected.

deprecate fashion

Controversial topic. Here are some reasons:

  • Fashion is way too loosely-defined, and amorphous. As fashion trends over time always change (I won't consider it to evolve) without any definitive standards. It feels like a counterpart to vehicle, overly broad.
  • This sounds like a way to bloat tag count, and prone of being overused by some users who may consider a certain character looking cool and fashionable in such a normal, common outfit. I think we are obliged to reduce the subjectivity on how tags should apply as much as possible.
  • Danbooru already have more visually descriptive tags for various style of attire such as lolita fashion, school uniform, and so on. They will hopefully render fashion ultimately useless.
  • It's far more reasonable to tag character's outfit with what appears on the image, like by using green headwear, camouflage jacket, black footwear and so on. Back to the point #1 - Fashion cannot be an umbrella term for arbitrary, amorphous style of outfit, unlike formal, casual or streetwear.

I am all open to any feedbacks, either supportive or critical regarding this BUR. Thank you for your time and effort.

Bumping again this BUR for another chance of reconsideration by the admins. We are opting for tags that describe clearer, more objective visual concept.

My biggest concern is that we say fashion makes people dump posts of tagged fashion like lolita fashion in it, but in fact it’s often used when we don’t have a good tag for. As much as we say "just use a more specific tag", all the fashion tags we have are sub-culture fashions like lolita fashion, punk, jirai kei, decora, yami kawaii, yume kawaii, steampunk, gothic, visual kei, gyaru or special occasion clothing like maid, school uniform, military uniform, ballet, japanese clothes, formal. Because they’re easy to recognize.

On a site like this, sub-culture fashion becomes the mainstream. we often forget about real life common human fashion, they’re not easy to classify, and way harder to find. How would we tag post #6249938 or post #6224514 or post #6119578 or post #6057892?

And of course, everyone wears clothes, but not every post puts the same attention to them. A lot of the posts in fashion gives me the feeling that it’s not that tagger doesn’t know what fashion it is, but because the posts has some focus on demonstrating what the characters are wearing and they usually include a lot of layers and elements, instead of, everyone wearing t-shirts. Funny enough, the closest replacement I can find of it is lineup is:sfw (E: when I wrote this lineup was severely undertagged despite its common use in costume announcement artworks, and the only time ppl care to tag it is on nsfw posts, glad to see that it's starting to get more acknowledgement the fashion cleanup, the front page is no longer so unrepresentative of its nature lol). Just look at fashion 4girls. But that would also let stuff like post #6250247 slip away (E: I'm putting it in lineup for the moment).

exactly my issue with this BUR, both the wiki and the results under it show that it's not an alternative to more specific fashion style tags or a pseudo-umbrella tag for them, it's not perfect but there needs to be a workable alternative if this gets deprecated

It's almost one year since autorejection. On the BUR I have already explained many reasons why this tag remain ambiguous, overly broad and should not be used anymore due to redundancy. I would like to know what the admins think about this issue, as well as further consideration.

*May also refer to fashionistic posing or covers.

For things like post #5400231 or poses we usually see on fashion magazine, I propose something like fashion_pose (based on what the current fashion wiki says).

Would downvote if I could. While it is pretty broad/ambiguous, the other tags under "See also" aren't necessarily more helpful, and fashion is an essential tag for finding look inspiration (yes, dressing like bishounen and other pretty boys like Kyon and Koizumi) whether it's undertagged or overtagged.

The more specific tags are so fucked, anyway. People seem to have a pretty good understanding that streetwear is urban gangsta shit, but doesn't have many posts. Casual and contemporary have a ton of posts, but casual is a melting pot of almost every clothing type imaginable + its wiki says to not tag it on characters that normally dress casual. Contemporary has the same rule and also allows modern environments without modern clothes, which is just anachronism.

Searching shouldn't require so much a priori knowledge, so please keep fashion.

That's just pose, else it's another layer of ambiguity, especially out of the context of a fake magazine cover and it being a JoJo character.
