The pillow hat tag seems to be another one of those concepts that have a specific meaning in the real world, but that on danbooru have been coopted to mean something completely unrelated - in this case "Yakumo Ran's hat"... Except that then our taggers looked at the shape of the hat and started adding it to Chen as well because it was pretty much the same style of hat. In truth what we're tagging with that tag is a mob cap with (sometimes) animal ear headwear. If you google "pillow hat" you'll realize that our tag has no reflection on reality. And if you google "pillow hat" + "touhou" you'll notice we're the only ones using this term that way.
the name pillow_hat is wrong but imo it's different from a mob_cap. In some illustrations it appears that the character's animal_ears produce the shape, but in other illustrations the pillow_hat appears to be made/sewn to accomodate the ears and/or have tassels attached at the top
weird case of artists copying each other and thereby self-enforcing a clothing piece that never existed
That "pillow hat" has a straight line, it doesn't have fox ears. Look at how it looks when unworn.
ok, the hat is straight, and? once it is on the head it takes on a shape more like a fox's ears, just like the Ran yakumo hat. and, the hat is still quite different from the mob cap.

You're trying to justify the existence of this tag using a hat that was designed last year and looks nothing like what we're talking about. Do you see pom poms on Ran's hat? Does it look ANYTHING like a beanie? The answer is obviously no.
At best artists sometimes add tassels, most times not even that. It's just a mob cap with added animal ears, it has the exact same types of frills. I don't know how you can't see that post #5890343 and post #5894433 are the exact same kind of hat. Or post #5890778 and post #5870656. Same texture, same frills, same color. It's a mob cap.
If you can't tell which tag is which as a glance, that's a strong indication that the two aren't distinct enough. In fact I suspect the only reason why there's this kind of results under pillow hat at all is because people started dumping hats that looked remotely similar to Ran's in here when they didn't know about animal ear headwear/hat.
The only design I found that didn't fit was the one used by Ragnarok Online, like in post #4930347, but whatever it is it's not a "pillow hat", because at best what you'll find on google for those is joke hats that incorporate an actual pillow behind the head. We should find the proper name for this specific design rather than having it hidden and unsearchable between 4k mob caps. Non-yakumo ran "pillow hats" are something like 6% of the result. That's a microscopic amount, definitely not good enough to justify this tag's existence given its usage.

On a side note, are animal ear headwear and animal hat mutually exclusive or sub sets? Should animal hat be renamed to animal ear hat? Current wiki states that it’s for animal ear hats, but the name gives the impression of general animal-themed hats. And if we do rename it, is there a tag for general animal-themed hats that aren’t animal ears hats? (compare post #5737488 and post #5524872, tho not sure what would post #5579928 and post #5735448 be)
(the thing’s that animal hat has a lot of sub tags, and bunny hat, cat hat, dog hat already implicate it, we’d have to garden them all at once)
I'm going to update this BUR as I go through the pages, to other admins: please don't approve this until I'm done. Probably gonna take me a while to go through all of the thousands of posts.
Using animal hat instead of animal ear headwear because I just discovered the mess that is the distinction between these two tags. That's for a separate topic.
I finished going through all the posts in this tag. The only ones that weren't animal hats were post #201874, post #2054301 and post #74274. They all look like different designs, so not sure if we have a tag for any of them.
