About usage of "Taiwan" tag

Posted under Tags

Well, I know this post is kind of stepping into geopolitics territory, but it need to be done.

Currently, the tag Taiwan is used as a sort-of umbrella term for the republican Chinese country that's now ruling over the titular island, along with when they are still ruling the mainland as the "Republic of China".

While the "Republic of China" in 1920 and "Taiwan" in 2022 is still technically the same country, the tag "Taiwan" is not an accurate description of the Kuomintang regime's rule over the mainland prior 1949. And especially since a considerable amount of Taiwanese prefer to stay away from the "One China" policy and prefer to consider the country a different entity from the mainland communist China rather than a "disputed government". I think some clarification is needed when a post explicitly mentions pre-1949 ROC.

Two current solutions I can think of is to either make an alias "Republic of China" to the "Taiwan" tag to imply that they are, in fact, the same country. Or to make a separate "Republic of China" tag to differentiate between the government prior and after 1949.

Any thoughts?

Could also just adapt the Kuomintang tag for use for Civil War-era Republic of China, since I don't know how much art we have on Danbooru that's specifically about the post-war Kuomintang dictatorship on the island (and even if we did, it's not like it's easy to find anyway, would need a taiwanese white terror tag or something). When most folks think of Taiwan it's typically after martial law was removed in 1987, whether in people, location or politics, and I think that's reflected for the most part.

As an aside, this reminds me how the Germany tag has a similar issue, since it is ostensibly supposed to be for modern Germany, with all other historical Germanies having their own tags, but looking at it reveals that's not exactly the case (especially with the lack of a German Empire tag for post-Prussian, pre-Versailles Germany).

Well, the Nazi tag is currently used as a de-facto tag for WW2 Germany in general. Although comparing the KMT to them is not exactly accurate since the KMT did ruled past their prime and still exists today (albeit in a debatably different form). So I think the tag can be used in a similar manner, since the KMT firmly maintained their "One China" claim up until the DPP came to power in Taiwan, where the overall general distinct culture of Taiwan we knew today became a thing.
