Standardizing Costume/Skin Tags?

Posted under Tags

I generally have trouble getting tag combinations to work, not only it increases the tag count required for the desired search but for an inherent psychological reason and inevitable limitation in the tagger's knowledge gentags are much more likely to be missed than the potential character tag. It's not hard to picture why: remembering specific attire of your favorite character is more taxing than merely remembering the name of the skin. The case for character tags is clearer when you factor all the subtle components that would define a specific skin and how losing a few of them even either by the artist's decision or the scene depicted (say: having sex) wouldn't make them a different character or skin. I concede there are simpler skin designs than others that could in fact be achieved by 2-tag search yet having character skins is all around easier for everyone.

I find it way, way easier to remember "Cocktail Dress Taihou", "Bikini Taihou", and "China Dress Taihou" compared to Forbidden Feast, Enraptured Companion, and Phoenix's Spring Song.

Until some poor sod has to tag an unrelated copyright and had to spend 3-5x extra time to tag because of all the irrelevant autocomplete suggestions.

Usually only one additional gentag is all one needs to narrow down the search. Sometimes two. Hairstyle, eye color, or specific element of a costume. Using Yuudachi_(kancolle) as an example one can get pertinent results with red_eyes/green_eyes or hair_flaps or scarf.

Could say the same about altskins from other copyrights too, for that matter. Most of them are just chartag + swimsuit or chartag + Chinese_clothes or chartag + sportswear... and so on.

You want Taihou_(forbidden_feast)_(azur_lane)? Taihou_(azur_lane) cocktail_dress immediately gives you pertinent results. Because Forbidden Feast Taihou is basically Taihou in a cocktail dress! Only reason why some are missed is because cocktail_dress isn't consistently tagged.

The overall issue is trying to create what are effectively compound tags to cater to users who can only search for two. In which case, well, maybe they should pony up a bit to help support the servers. Or maybe we can allow more tag searches for basic users (two was fine back then, now maybe not so much). Like one free chartag or something, and then another tag on top, enabling 4 tag searches. And Gold and Plat can get more.

Evazion has already very thoroughly covered how unreliable gentags are. Only about 2/3 of Forbidden Feast are actually tagged cocktail dress. Frankly, I don't want to have to rely on mutliple 2 tag searches or a 4+ gentag search to find something popular enough to have hundreds of posts, and having to do so just increases the amount of noise and false negatives.

Not to mention that searches for character tags are vastly more popular than their constituent gentags. Users don't care to and shouldn't have to try multiple combinations of searches just to find a character with a definite design.

Alright, suppose we go with, say:

  • Zuikaku_(Kai)_(Kancolle)
  • Zuikaku_(Kai_Ni)_(Kancolle)
  • Zuikaku_(Kai_Ni)_(Winter_2018)_(Kancolle)
  • Zuikaku_(Kai_Ni_A)_(Kancolle)
  • Zuikaku_(Kai_Ni_A)_(Winter_2018)_(Kancolle)
  • Zuikaku_(Christmas)_(Kancolle)

Now watch as they completely drown out Azur Lane Zui and all the other Zuikakus.

I suppose I wouldn't mind per se having every single 'ski'n variant being tagged, for every single copyright, if something can be done about the autocomplete issue.

(Remilia_Scarlet_(CoLA), anyone? All those warugaki Remilias don't tend to get tagged Curiosities of Lotus Asia, see. Despite having that CoLA hat.)

Perhaps a per-user "autocomplete blacklist", maybe? All tags on the blacklist automatically get shunted to the end of autocomplete, kinda. So basically like blacklisting tags... but this is only for autocomplete listing, and it doesn't completely remove them either.
