Jack Plug aliasing

Posted under Tags

BUR #5754 has been approved by @evazion.

create alias jack_plug -> audio_jack
create alias headphone_jack -> audio_jack

I've never heard anyone call it a "jack plug" before and it took me a quite a while to figure out that that's the name.
Aliasing these other common names would make it easier to find the tag.

Edit: BUR used to be

alias headphone_jack -> jack_plug
alias audio_jack -> jack_plug

Updated

Why not just alias it to one of the better recognized terms then instead of aliasing the better recognized terms to the less recognized one? The tag is going to be buried amongst all the other general tags on an image, might as well use the term people would recognize when they glance over them.

It might... technically cause issues with things that are technically neither headphone_jacks nor audio jacks, despite looking like them? The current jack_plug wiki does seem to allow for this:

A connector commonly used for audio equipment.

(bolded mine)

Jirou_Kyouka's earlobe extensions being the most problematic example. Satori's Third Eye are also sometimes depicted with jack plugs (e.g. post #1127722, post #1496070). Hatsune Miku also has one example (post #1688923) with her twintails plugged into her head with such a jack. And I guess it might conceivably be used for cyberpunk (e.g. Matrix) headjacks too, though I haven't been able to find such examples yet.

Perhaps that was why whoever came up with the tag decided to use the term jack_plug to divorce it from the usual "audio equipment" connotations. Instead of using a more intuitive term.

Though, personally don't quite care about this (yet). Just pointing it out to clarify things.

I didn’t create the tag, but I merged/cleaned up the various audio plug tags a while ago and wrote wikis for the remaining ones. I decided on keeping jack plug because it is also used for non-audio stuff, as you said. Also, it was originally a phone line connector and I’m a bit of a perfectionist. ;) I’m not a native English speaker, though, so if jack plug is too uncommon in most of the English-speaking parts of the world, I’m fine with aliasing it to audio_jack. No alias to headphone jack, please, because this type of connector is the connector for other audio equipment like microphones and electric guitars, too.

jack_plug is a pretty bad name for this tag, I've never heard that phrase in my life and when I saw this thread I assumed that it was about car parts. I would definitely prefer an alias to audio_jack.

post #1688923 is still an audio_jack, even if it is not currently being used to transmit audio, likewise with the Satori examples. The 1/4" jack itself (and the 1/8" jack, e.g. in post #1127722) has exactly one actual function, which is transmitting audio (including phone line audio), and it remains audio equipment when used for other purposes (the same way a microphone remains a microphone when its being used as a dildo).

Jirou Kyouka's earlobes are more of a problem because they seem to be flesh in the shape of an audio_jack, not an actual jack. But calling them jack_plugs doesn't really fix the problem, because that's also primarily supposed to be the connector itself, not "anything shaped like the connector". I think her earlobes can be called audio_jacks just as easily as they can be called jack_plugs, because they're very obviously supposed to be an imitation of these connectors (and canonically they do transmit audio).

I agree with CormacM and I’ve updated the BUR to reflect this.

On a side note, I wanted to rename jack_plug -> audio_jack so that the wiki would be moved automatically, but it wouldn’t let me, so alias and copy/paste it is.

An alias will move the wiki as well, don't worry.

Agree on jack_plug -> audio_jack alias. Agree on retaining its use for Jirou Kyouka's earlobes. Retaining vote (in favor of the alias) for the updated BUR.
