Either way, the characters' primary names will have to be maintained/changed accordingly.
Anyhow, on that matter Ace Attorney/Gyakuten Saiban is kinda trickier compared to Pokemon/Fire Emblem/etc., because the series relies on a lot of Japanese culture bits and other references that the localization team have to bend over backwards to accommodate. They somehow manage to make it fit somewhat in the games themselves (though there are still a lot of really contrived justifications for overt Japanese culture/motifs and other Japanisms; sort of like calling rice balls donuts in Pokemon but even worse), but once fanart by Japanese artists come into play the whole looks-Japanese-and-feel-Japanese-but-nuh-uh-this-STORY-IS-SET-IN-LOS-ANGELES-AMERICA-BABY thing just... crumbles apart.
(And the legal system depicted too, for that matter. Though, like all the other elements, they have to adapt those somehow when they localize the games, otherwise it just won't sell.)
Meanwhile for Pokemon/Fire Emblem the reader (and translator) can just do a simple name swap most of the time.
